Himeji Castle is the finest existing example of the classic Japanese castle from the Feudal Period. Dating to 1333, the castle has 83 rooms as well excellent defensive measures. The initial version was a fort built by Akamatsu Norimura, which was torn down and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle, named after the hill it occupies. 200 years later it was remolded into the first version of Himeji Castle. Over the centuries it has been remodeled several more times, and survived both the mass destruction of castles during the Meiji period and World War II intact.
Himeji Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the most visited castle in Japan.
