Hardtack has been a storage staple for many years. It goes by various names, but hardtack is probably the one most Americans recognize.
After a long hiatus I recently went back to the Frugal Squirrels forums. There’s still a lot of good prepping info there, like this recipe and personal experience with making and storing hardtack.
Hard food for hard times, I suppose one could say.
Had a recipe for pemmican from some hippy-dippy hiker cook book. It was pretty good and easier to eat than hardtack from what I understand. Lost the book, dammit! Thanks for the info.
