Nearby resident Sean Wilson said he heard gunshots outside his apartment. He went out a short time later and saw police pull up and pull a cab driver out of his car and into a squad car.
Wilson said he saw a person in the front passenger seat of the cab and that he appeared to be dead.
He said police told him it was an attempted robbery. “It was an apparent robbery that went wrong,” Wilson said. “Or, it went right, depending on how you look at it.”
Yes, Mr. Wilson, it did go “right”–the bad guy has now assumed ambient temperature. However, the Charlotte Observer, ever aware of its position as the fishwrap of record for Moscow on the Catawba, just has to throw in this tidbit.
In North Carolina, it’s legal to kill someone in defense of yourself or another. In self-defense shooting cases, police and the Mecklenburg District Attorney work together to investigate and decide whether to press charges.
Note that it’s legal to “kill someone”, not to “defend yourself”. Local officials have to get in the game as well.
Authorities have not said whether McClure will be charged. The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office will make a final decision.
I say the cabbie needs a medal and a free box of ammo in the caliber of his choice. I also anxiously await the lowlife’s family protestations of how good a person he was and how he would never have hurt anyone.
Which, of course, our brave cabbie has now ensured.
