Potato Chips Anointed in Blood

So…Mrs. Freeholder decided she wanted burgers and chips for supper. No grocery store chips in the house, but I’m a prepper. We have potatoes and we have ourselves one serious gee-whiz manual non-electric slicer-chopper thing.

The slicer-chopper thing has an insert that warns the blades are sharp. This is an important point which I will come back to shortly.

I got out the slicer-chopper thing, laughed at the insert, got out some potatoes, peeled them with our SuperPeeler, and proceeded to use the slicer-chopper thing to create raw chips.

And sliced a tiny part of the tip of my right index finger right off about half-way through the potato. My fault, I was trying to look in the catch container to see if we were getting slices and didn’t stop running the thing. They aren’t kidding when they say the blades are sharp. I couldn’t tell that I was cutting until I got that sting in my fingertip. Yep, she’s cutting.

I’m not sure where that tiny bit of my flesh wound up, but I have my suspicions. I have brought none of this to Mrs. Feeeholder’s attention and have no plans to. Protein is good for you.

OK, I’m a prepper. I have plenty of boo-boo stuff in the bathroom. The slice stopped bleeding with some pressure and one fingertip bandage later, I’m back slicing.

This time I was being more careful. Despite having half the potato left, I got the sticker handle and used it. And promptly sliced my thumb. This time I got a good hunk of the tip and the blood sort of flew. I pinched the finger hard and cut the blood flow, but it cranked up when I released it. Back to the bathroom, this time With Mrs. Freeholder in tow.

One nice thing about Mrs. Freeholder having worked in her family daycare business, she’s not squeamish. I got back into the boo-boo drawer and this time I got out the Celox. I’ve never had to use it on myself, but there is a first time for everything. A sprinkle and the bleeding stopped, no pressure needed. I bandaged myself and finished making the raw chips. They’re soaking in water now. That’s not to wash off the blood, it’s part of the recipe.

I just finished up an Amazon order for some hemostatic gauze pads, a pair of cut-resistant gloves, and some other first-aid goodies that I thought of. Because I’m a prepper, and every learning experience helps me see new things that might be useful to have around.

Oh…follow me for more recipes.

  1. I once tried making my own potato chips – it didn’t go well. Heck, even the frozen tater tots don’t seem to work well for me. About time I came up with a way to use them up – they’ve been in the freezer for too long. Nope, don’t want to run the oven during the summer; it’s too difficult keeping the place cool as it is.

I’m a few items short of being able to equip a field hospital. 🙂 Whenever I look at those clotting agents, I balk at the price. Same for the Israeli military bandages. I recently looked at zip-tie wound closures – those look pretty slick.

  2. Be careful, or we’ll have to call you Stubby.
I have an old square metal grater-slicer-shredder that I use a lot. It can also slice you up, but no moving parts to deal with. I did fry potato slices once, they were ok, but not great.
I’ve been using an air fryer for frozen tater tots, hash brown patties, chicken nuggets, reheating some Chinese foods. I must say it works great, better than pan frying or using the toaster oven. Also cooked a small pork loin in 16 minutes, came out perfect.
But I love regular fried food too.
