Let’s stretch out on the subject of dance. Today, we’re we’re going to look at b-boying, otherwise known as breakdancing.

b-boying started out possibly in the late 1960s, but was definitely a thing by the 1970s. First practiced by Blacks and Latinos in New York City, it has spread across the globe and is practiced by youth who could be the grandkids of the original practitioners.

Starting as an East Coast phenomena based on breakbeats and quickly embraced the new hip-hop culture. There are now a dizzying variety of sub-genres and spin offs, with nuances that are beyond this short blurb.

However, we have to discuss one, if for no other reason than to have the FBI join us in the conversation-yes, we’re talking about Boogaloo. Boogaloo is a West Coast version of b-boying, “founded” in Fresno, CA in 1977.

I have a vision of the 1st Electric Boogaloo Brigade working their way through DC toward the White House, with Don Cornelius providing the play by play.
