Working is a musical, based on the 1974 Studs Terkel book of the same name. It’s a story about several different, mostly blue collar, workers and their feelings about their jobs, set in the 1970s. It was first staged in 1977 and was nominated for 5 Tony Awards and 4 Drama Desk Awards, winning 2 Drama Desks for Outstanding Featured Actress and Outstanding Director.
The musical has been revised several times, adding and deleting characters and story lines. It’s a perennial sort of show, playing somewhere every season, with major productions ranging from Broadway to London. For gun fans, the original Broadway production featured Joe Mantegna, who also was the star (sorta) of Michael Bane’s series Gun Stories.
As a minor fan of Studs Terkel, this one is on my list of shows to see if it every gets within driving distance.
