I never thought I’d see the day…

…when we as a country were told that we could be taxed not on what we earned, not on what we consumed, not on what we owned, but on what we choose not to consume.

I take a very small comfort in the apparent concept that this was okay because it was a tax, rather than okay under the already tortured Commerce Clause. I take considerably less comfort from the legion of elected asses who are promising repeal. I don’t think we’ll see it, no matter how pissed people are now or in November.

We’re no different at this point than France, who in the face of budget problems caused by too generous government benefits decided that people can retire earlier.

I figure we are now well and truly fucked.
